The beach at Big Talbot Island State Park is one of the most photographed beaches in the area. It goes by various names, for obvious reasons, Black Rock beach, Dead tree Beach, Boneyard Beach. Erosion causes the oaks at the top of the 20 foot bluff to fall to the beach. Wind, rain and waves make the trees look like large skeletons on the beach. The other interesting feature are the ‘black rocks’. Not really rocks at all but a soil of unique geological importance. The soil is composed of organic matter, ferrous oxide, and some aluminum. In the sunlight, if you look closely, red, green and blue colors can be seen.
In the 1940’s the bluffs were used for bombing practice by the military. Every once in a while unexploded ordinance are uncovered. If you discover any large metal objects, DO NOT touch it, call the authorities. You may also recognize the area from the movie GI Jane, which was filmed there and at Huguenot Park.
